Iconic war photography hauntingly reduced to simple, empty lanscapes

'Czech photographer Pavel Maria Smejkal is responsible for this arresting series of images that are completely familiar yet strikingly alien. Taking iconic photographs of moments that have shaped the course of human history (think Iwo Jima, Tiananmen Square and The Grassy Knoll) Pavel removes the human elements from them, leaving nothing but empty, haunting landscapes behind. They offer an eerily prosaic look at the geographical plainness of sites that have been imbued with such enormous importance.'

DR JULIUS NEUBRONNER’S MINIATURE PIGEON CAMERA

I saw this post this morning and just loved the absurdity of the idea, as well as the actual images produced. *LINK*

"In 1908 Dr Julius Neubronner patented a miniature pigeon camera activated by a timing mechanism. The invention brought him international notability after he presented it at international expositions in Dresden, Frankfurt and Paris in 1909–1911. Spectators in Dresden could watch the arrival of the camera-equipped carrier pigeons, and the photos were immediately developed and turned into postcards which could be purchased."

Tinderbox at Independents Day and an idea

Hi everybody! Here's a picture of Tinderbox at Independents Day. Elida's wonderful headphones creation to listen to the Heartstrings Collective drawings' songs were popular!
Click below for some more photos of the day:

STALLS SLIDE SHOW

ACTS SLIDE SHOW

ART EXHIBITION SLIDESHOW: myself and Elida had entries in it. I wonder if it would be possible to have a Tinderbox entry for another year, may be with people submitting one work each around a certain topic? Or we could also try at another exhibition place somewhere else. I've been looking around the web and found this place, seems quite good:
Ormond Studios

I could check out how much it would be and if everybody taking part chips in a bit it should be quite affordable. If anybody else has any suggestions for an exhibition space, put in a comment here. My idea is for this exhibition to include any type of art: photography, illustration, film (if the space can accommodate screenings), anything, as long as it's all around whichever topic we choose! Post any ideas you might have about this on the blog please.

Another idea would be to do the exhibition based around Jane's wonderful Heartstrings Collective song drawings project, which already produced such great work for Independents Day (scroll down the posts please) and opening it to further submissions by photographers and other kinds of artists. What do you think about it Jane?

Till next time. May be I'll meet quite a few of you at the Photography Auction in aid of Alzheimers (see my previous post)!

Willy Ronis

An exhibition has opened this week in Paris to celebrate Willy Ronis' legendary work. Visitors to the Monnaie de Paris on the Left Bank of the Seine will be able to discover some of the late photographer's most famous works alongside of some more secretive snapshots of his quest to define humanism's aestheticism.

This beautiful poster for the exhibition is presenting one of his most famous picture, Provençal Nude, 1949, a picture of his wife.

A certain idea of Beauty.

Willy Ronis died at age 99, on September 12, 2009.
